Invoice without a company as an IT developer in Sweden
Invoicing without a company as an IT developer does not necessarily mean that you have to start a limited company, apply for F-tax, and spend your evenings doing accounting. With Worknode, you can take on IT assignments as usual, let us invoice the customer, and receive your salary with A-tax, collective agreements, insurance, and occupational pension. What does it mean to invoice as an IT developer?
More and more developers are choosing to freelance alongside or instead of traditional employment. In practice, invoicing as a developer means that you sell your time and expertise on assignment, but allow invoices, taxes, and fees to be handled in a way that suits your everyday life. You can either start your own business or use a service such as Worknode, which allows you to invoice without a company and still receive a secure salary.
Common ways to invoice as a developer:
Self-employment via Worknode
You are employed by Worknode when you invoice. We take care of invoicing, taxes, fees, and salary with collective agreements and insurance.
Your own limited company
You start a company, apply for F-tax, and take care of your own accounting, VAT, salaries, and annual reports.
You run a business in your own name and are personally responsible for contracts, finances, and taxes.
Employed through a consulting firm
The consulting firm invoices the customer and you receive a salary, but often have less influence over price and terms.
About WorkNode in brief
Worknode is a Swedish self-employment platform that allows you to invoice without a company and receive a salary with taxes, employer contributions and administration handled. Worknode has two pricing models:
Worknode FLEX - 3.95% per invoice, no fixed cost, no lock-in period
Worknode PRO - fixed monthly fee from SEK 995, unlimited billing with no percentage charge
Worknode has a collective agreement with the trade union Svenska Medarbetare, which can provide extra security regarding salary, sick pay, vacation and insurance for those who report their assignments according to the terms.
The model is suitable both for those who invoice occasionally (FLEX) and for those who invoice regularly and want to minimize percentage fees (PRO).

Frequently asked questions about invoicing as an IT developer
When you start invoicing as a developer, practical questions quickly arise about F-tax, side jobs, taxes, pensions, and how it works if the customer is located abroad. To make it easy, we have compiled answers to the most common questions we receive from IT developers who are considering using Worknode to invoice their assignments.
Do I need to have F-tax to invoice as a developer?
No, you do not need your own F-tax if you invoice as a developer via Worknode. When you use Worknode, we take care of F-tax, VAT registration, and employer responsibilities. You register the assignment, we invoice the customer, and you receive a salary with A-tax, collective agreement, insurance, and pension. For you, it's much like a regular job, but you retain the freedom to choose assignments and set your price. If you start a sole proprietorship or limited company instead, you will need to apply for F- or FA-tax with the Swedish Tax Agency, report VAT, and prepare financial statements. The route through Worknode is therefore often easier, especially if you want to try out freelance life without committing to your own company.
How much will I get left in salary when I invoice via Worknode?
How much you get left depends on your hourly rate, how much you bill per month, and whether you use WorkNode FLEX or PRO. Simply put, you can think of a large part of the invoice as always going to taxes and employer contributions, regardless of whether you are self-employed or have your own company, while WorkNode's fee is the part that distinguishes the models. With WorkNode FLEX, you pay 3.95 percent of the invoice amount and get everything related to salary, collective agreements, insurance, and pension included. With WorkNode PRO, you pay a low, fixed monthly fee, which means that the fee per invoiced krona is lower when you have a high and stable turnover. At worknode.se, you can use our calculator to estimate your net salary based on your hourly rate.
Can I invoice foreign customers as a developer via Worknode?
Yes, in many cases you can invoice both Swedish and foreign customers as a developer via Worknode. The important thing is that we can identify the customer, that the assignment is legal, and that the transaction complies with both Swedish law and relevant regulations in the customer's country. For customers within the EU, reverse tax liability often applies to services, which means that the invoice may need to be issued without Swedish VAT, while assignments outside the EU may be handled differently. You fill in the customer's country and organization details in Worknode, and we will help you set up the invoice correctly. You will then receive your salary from Worknode as usual once the customer has paid, regardless of where the customer is located.
Can I combine a permanent job with freelance assignments via Worknode?
Yes, many developers use Worknode for side gigs alongside their regular employment. You remain employed by your regular employer and receive a salary from them, while using Worknode to invoice freelance assignments in the evenings, on weekends, or between projects. From a tax perspective, both employers pay preliminary tax and employer contributions for their part, and the Tax Agency reconciles your total income in your personal tax return. What you need to be careful about is checking whether your employment contract contains non-competition clauses or restrictions on secondary employment. If you are unsure, you can talk to your manager or union representative before taking on assignments through Worknode.
When should I choose a limited company instead of Worknode?
A private limited company may be right for you if you want to build a larger consulting company in the long term, hire more developers, or have greater freedom in terms of dividends and ownership structure. At the same time, a company means that you yourself need to take responsibility for accounting, VAT, employer declarations, payroll, annual reports, and board work. For many freelance developers, especially in the beginning, the administrative burden outweighs the potential tax benefits. Worknode is often the best option when you want to get started quickly, try out freelance life, have a secure salary and full insurance without having to set up a finance department. If you then grow, or want to combine your own company with Worknode, you can seek help from an accounting consultant or advisor to calculate the options.
